What Bermuda Needs
in Montgomery
Bermuda is a sun-loving, fast-growing, high-nitrogen grass. It thrives in full sun across East Montgomery, Taylor Road, Eastchase and many Pike Road subdivisions. In the right conditions it produces the dense, striped, green lawn most homeowners are chasing.
What most homeowners miss: improved Tifton Bermuda varieties like Tifway 419 are sterile h — also see our core aeration schedule for Bermuda. hybrids. They do not produce viable seed and must be sprigged or sodded if large areas need repair — not overseeded.

What to Expect in Spring
Bermuda goes completely dormant during dormancy. By December it looks straw-colored and dead. It is not. When daytime temperatures consistently reach the mid-60s in late March or early April, Bermuda begins breaking dormancy — first appearing as a grey-green blush across the soil surface, then gradually filling in. Do not fertilize until the lawn is at least 50% green. Fertilizing before the root system is active wastes product and can damage new growth if a late frost follows.
By late May, properly maintained Bermuda here should be consistently green. By July, on a good program, it should be dense enough that you can barely see soil between blades. That is the benchmark. If your Bermuda is not there by late July, something in the program needs adjusting.
Spring scalping — mowing Bermuda very short (half inch or lower) in late February or early March before green-up — removes dormant thatch and allows sunlight to warm the soil faster. Done at the right time it accelerates green-up by one to two weeks. Done too late, after green-up has begun, it removes tender new growth and sets the lawn back by several weeks.
When to Choose Bermuda Over Zoysia
Choose Bermuda if your lawn gets full sun all day, you want fast recovery from damage or heavy foot traffic, and you are comfortable with an active maintenance schedule during the summer months. Bermuda rewards consistent attention.
Most improved Bermuda varieties planted in Montgomery — Tifway 419, Celebration, TifTuf — are sterile hybrids that do not produce viable seed. They cannot be overseeded. Bare areas require sod or plugs. Common Bermuda can be seeded but produces an inconsistent, coarser result compared to named varieties. If you are installing new Bermuda sod in Pike Road or East Montgomery, ask specifically which variety is being used.
- Needs minimum 6 hours of direct sun daily — thins dramatically in partial shade
- Mow at 1 to 1.5 inches for density — scalping promotes the growth habit that produces stripes
- Pre-emergent window closes mid-March — do not miss it
- Brown patch risk peaks June through August during humid nights above 70°F
