Professional lawn aeration — AL licensed applicators. Montgomery AL relieves clay soil compaction that blocks water, air and nutrients from grass roots. Annual aeration for Bermuda and Zoysia improves density, colour and drought tolerance — and compounds every fertilization application.

Why Aerate

Montgomery Soil
Compacts Over Time

Montgomery sits on a mix of red clay and sandy loam soils. Both compact under foot traffic, mowing equipment and rain impact. Compacted soil prevents oxygen, water and fertilizer from penetrating to the root zone — even if you are watering and feeding regularly.

Core aeration removes small plugs of soil across the lawn, creating channels for air, wate — also reduces brown patch disease riskr and nutrients to move freely. Results are visible in root density and colour within 4–6 weeks. It also reduces thatch buildup — a significant issue for Zoysia and Bermuda.

  • Best time for Bermuda and Zoysia: May–July (active growth)
  • Centipede: aerate only if compaction is severe — June only
  • Follow with fertilization within 48 hours for best uptake
  • Soil plugs break down naturally — no cleanup needed
🌍

Relieves Compaction

Opens channels through compacted clay and heavy soils so roots can extend deeper.

💧

Better Water Absorption

Reduces runoff and puddling. Water reaches the root zone instead of running off the surface.

🍀

Reduces Thatch

Soil plugs help break down organic thatch buildup — especially important for Zoysia.

🌱

Stronger Roots

Improved airflow and nutrient access drives deeper root growth that survives summer heat better.

What Happens on
Aeration Day

💧
Before

Pre-Water Lawn

Lawn should be moist but not soaked. We advise on irrigation timing before arrival.

⚚️
During

Core Extraction

Machine removes 2–3 inch soil cores across the entire lawn. Two passes in high-traffic areas.

🌱
After

Leave Plugs

Cores stay on the lawn — they break down in 2–4 weeks and return microorganisms to the surface.

Fertilize & Water

Apply fertilizer into open channels within 48 hours for maximum uptake. Water daily for a week.

FAQs

Core Aeration Questions

For Bermuda and Zoysia in high-traffic areas or clay-heavy soils, annual aeration is recommended. Lawns with good sandy soil and low traffic may only need aeration every 2–3 years. We assess compaction on the first visit.
Centipede can be aerated in June when actively growing, but only if compaction is measurable. Aerating Centipede unnecessarily can damage stolons and slow recovery. We assess before recommending.
For warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, St. Augustine), overseeding after aeration is not typically recommended. Improved Bermuda varieties are sterile hybrids that can't be seeded. The benefit of aeration alone — improved root development and nutrient uptake — is significant without adding seed.

Do You Need Aeration?

How to Tell If Your Lawn Actually Needs Aeration

Push a flat-head screwdriver into your lawn in June. If it takes significant effort to reach 2 inches deep, your soil is compacted and will respond well to core aeration. If it slides in easily, compaction is minimal and aeration may not be necessary this year. Most Montgomery lawns with clay-heavy soil need annual aeration. Sandier lawns in Pike Road's newer subdivisions may only need it every two to three years.

Core aerators vs. spike aerators: Core aerators pull actual plugs of soil out of the ground, leaving channels that stay open for weeks. Spike aerators puncture the soil without removing material — and on already-compacted Montgomery clay, they can actually increase compaction by pressing soil sideways around the spike. If you are renting an aerator or hiring someone else, confirm it is a core aerator. Spike aeration on compacted clay makes the problem worse, not better.

Zoysia and Thatch

Core Aeration and Zoysia Thatch Management

Zoysia builds thatch faster than Bermuda. Annual core aeration is the most effective ongoing management strategy. The soil plugs left on the surface after aeration introduce soil microorganisms directly into the thatch layer — microbes that accelerate decomposition and break down the organic material that accumulates between the soil and the grass blades. Done consistently, aeration keeps Zoysia thatch under control without the need for aggressive mechanical dethatching, which stresses the lawn and requires weeks of recovery.

Aeration also compounds the benefit of fertilization. Open soil channels created by the aerator allow fertilizer to move directly into the root zone rather than sitting on top of a thatch layer and volatilizing. Fertilizing within 48 hours of core aeration is one of the highest-efficiency applications we offer.

  • Best timing for Bermuda and Zoysia: May through July during active growth
  • Centipede: only if compaction is confirmed — June, during active growth only
  • Water the lawn the day before aeration — moist but not saturated soil cores properly
  • Leave soil plugs on the surface — they break down in 2 to 4 weeks
