St. Augustine Lawn Care
in Montgomery, AL
St. Augustine thrives in Montgomery's older, tree-lined neighbourhoods — book a shade lawn assessment where shade limits Bermuda's performance. Its coarse texture and blue-green colour make it one of the most recognisable grasses in the area — and one of the most specific to care for.
Serving Montgomery, Pike Road, Prattville, Millbrook & Wetumpka. Zone 8a lawn specialists.
What St. Augustine Needs
in Montgomery
St. Augustine is the best choice for partial-shade yards — see all Montgomery grass types compared. Common under oaks and mature hardwoods in older Cloverdale, Garden District and Millbrook properties. It performs with as little as 4 hours of filtered sun, where Bermuda would fail entirely.
It has the highest moisture requirements of Montgomery's four main grasses — see also chinch bug control and is most vulnerable to chinch bug damage and grey leaf spot in summer stress periods. Proper watering and vigilance during June–August are critical.
- Best shade tolerance of warm-season grasses
- Mow at 3–4 inches — tallest of all four types
- 2–4 lbs nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year
- Chinch bug and grey leaf spot primary risks
- Cannot be seeded — only sod or plugs
Chinch Bug Control
Monitor June–Aug for yellowing in hot, sunny border areas. Soap-flush test confirms chinch bugs vs drought damage.
Grey Leaf Spot
Diamond-shaped lesions in summer heat. Stress-related. Reduce nitrogen, improve air circulation, apply fungicide.
Weed Control
Fewer herbicides are safe on St. Augustine. We use only St. Augustine-labelled products to prevent damage.
Irrigation
Needs 1 inch of water weekly. More than any other Montgomery grass type. Drought stress opens disease risk.

Chinch Bug vs. Drought vs. Grey Leaf Spot
Three problems look nearly identical on St. Augustine in summer, and treating the wrong one wastes time while the lawn keeps declining.
Chinch bugs cause yellowing that starts at the hottest, driest edges of the lawn — along sidewalks, driveways, and south-facing slopes. The damaged areas are irregular but always begin in the most heat-stressed locations. Confirm with the soap-flush test: two tablespoons of dish soap in one gallon of water, poured on the edge of a damaged area. Wait two minutes. Chinch bugs surface — they are small (1/8 inch), black, with white wings. Five or more per square foot means treatment is needed.
Drought stress causes the blades to wilt and roll inward lengthwise before any color change occurs. The grass looks grey-green and flat. Water immediately — if roots are still viable, the blades recover within 24 hours. If they do not recover after thorough irrigation, the damage has progressed to root death and you are dealing with something beyond drought.
Grey leaf spot appears as small diamond or oval lesions on individual blades — a dark border surrounding a grey or tan center. It spreads rapidly during humid weather after nitrogen applications in summer. If you see this pattern, stop any nitrogen fertilization immediately, apply a fungicide labeled for grey leaf spot, and improve air circulation if possible by trimming overhanging branches.
Where St. Augustine Performs Best in Montgomery
St. Augustine is the right choice for older Montgomery neighborhoods with established tree canopy — Cloverdale, the Garden District, parts of Millbrook along the river, and shaded lots in Wetumpka. In these areas, where mature water oaks and pecan trees make full-sun grasses impractical, St. Augustine fills in where Bermuda simply cannot survive.
In newer developments with younger trees and more open sun — Pike Road, Hampstead, East Montgomery subdivisions — Bermuda or Zoysia typically outperforms St. Augustine because the lack of shade removes the main advantage St. Augustine offers.
- Cannot be seeded — only sod or plugs for establishment and repair
- Needs 1 inch of water weekly — more than any other warm-season grass
- Mow at 3 to 4 inches — the tallest of Montgomery's four grasses
- Most susceptible to chinch bugs June through August in hot, dry periods
