Grass Type Care
in Montgomery, AL
Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede and St. Augustine each grow differently, feed differently, and need different fertilization rates and respond to disease and weeds differently. We identify your grass first, then build a programme around it.
Serving Montgomery, Pike Road, Prattville, Millbrook & Wetumpka. Zone 8a lawn specialists.
Montgomery's Four Main
Lawn Grass Types
All four are warm-season grasses that grow actively from April through October — serving our full Montgomery service area. In Zone 8a and go dormant (tan and straw-like) from November through March. That is where the similarities end. Each has its own nitrogen requirements, mowing height, weed vulnerability, and disease profile.
Bermuda Grass
Most common in full-sun Montgomery yards. See our Bermuda lawn care programme. Aggressive grower. Highest nitrogen demand (4–6 lbs N/yr). Most common in Eastchase, Taylor Road and East Montgomery corridors.
Learn More →Zoysia Grass
Dense, slow-growing, premium feel. Moderate nitrogen (2–4 lbs N/yr). Common in Pike Road new developments and Hampstead. Excellent shade tolerance compared to Bermuda.
Learn More →Centipede Grass
Low-maintenance, acid-loving. Only 1 lb N/yr — the least of any warm-season grass. Over-fertilizing causes centipede decline. Common in older neighbourhoods and shaded lots.
Learn More →St. Augustine
Broadest shade tolerance. Coarse texture, blue-green colour. Higher moisture needs. Common near tree canopy in older Montgomery and Millbrook properties.

Compare
Nitrogen per Year (per 1,000 sq ft)
Bermuda: 4–6 lbs | Zoysia: 2–4 lbs | Centipede: 1 lb | St. Augustine: 2–4 lbs. Applying Bermuda rates to Centipede causes decline within one season.
Mowing Height
Bermuda: 1–1.5" | Zoysia: 1–2" | Centipede: 1.5–2.5" | St. Augustine: 3–4". Cutting any grass too short stresses it and invites weeds and disease.
Shade Tolerance
St. Augustine (best) > Zoysia > Centipede > Bermuda (least). Bermuda in heavy shade thins dramatically — it needs at least 6 hours of direct sun.
Disease Risk
Centipede: large patch (fall/spring). Bermuda & Zoysia: brown patch (summer). St. Augustine: grey leaf spot. Each disease has a different treatment and prevention window.

How to Tell Which Grass You Have
Most Montgomery homeowners have lived with their lawn for years without knowing exactly which grass they are managing. Here is how to identify each type by sight.
- Bermuda: Fine, grey-green blades. Spreads aggressively by surface runners (stolons) and underground stems (rhizomes). Goes completely straw-colored in winter. Common in full-sun yards across East Montgomery, Eastchase, and Taylor Road corridors.
- Zoysia: Denser and slower than Bermuda. Blades slightly wider, firm underfoot. Established Zoysia is difficult to push through with your fingers. Common in Pike Road developments and Hampstead.
- Centipede: Wider, paddle-shaped blades. Distinctive lime-green or yellow-green color — noticeably lighter than Bermuda. Grows slowly, stays relatively low without frequent mowing. The above-ground stolons look like centipede legs.
- St. Augustine: Widest blade of all four, coarse texture, blue-green color. Does not fully dormant in mild Montgomery winters — may stay partially green in January. Common under tree canopy in Cloverdale, Garden District, and older Millbrook properties.
Still unsure? Send us a close photo of the blade and a stolon against a coin for scale. Grass identification is free and takes us less than a minute.
When Your Yard Has More Than One Grass Type
Some Montgomery properties have two grass types — Bermuda in the open sun, St. Augustine or Zoysia in the shaded areas under mature trees. Applying a uniform treatment schedule across both zones usually means one grass is being over-fed or the other is being under-treated.
We identify each zone separately and recommend treatment accordingly. It is more work upfront, but it prevents the damage that comes from a one-size-fits-all approach on a mixed-grass property.
